LEARNING OBJECTIVES


  • Understand fetal brain development and malformations:

    • Describe the key stages of fetal brain development from the first to the second trimester
    • Identify developmental abnormalities affecting the commissures, midbrain, hindbrain and posterior fossa
    • Recognize the sonographic features and diagnostic challenges of agenesis and dysgenesis of the corpus callosum
    • Understand the development of the human cortex, including neuronal migration, cortical lamination and the subplate
  • Integrate imaging, genetics and fetal therapy:



    • Correlate fetal brain phenotypes with potential genetic and molecular causes
    • Understand how neuroimaging findings can guide genetic investigation and counselling
    • Evaluate the role of fetal therapy in individual cases and understand the factors influencing treatment decisions
    • Recognize the limitations of imaging and phenotype-based assessment when establishing a genetic diagnosis
  • Interpret fetal neuroimaging findings:


    • Apply advanced neurosonography and fetal MRI to the assessment of complex brain abnormalities
    • Interpret fetal MRI findings in the evaluation of the posterior fossa, cortical development and intracranial lesions
    • Recognize the imaging features of fetal intracranial haemorrhage, vascular injury, venous thrombosis and ischaemic brain injury
    • Identify key features of fetal intracranial tumours, including haemorrhage, mass effect and associated changes in surrounding brain tissue
    • Understand the principles and diagnostic value of transvaginal neurosonography in assessing cortical lamination and the subplate
  • Apply a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and counselling:

    • Integrate ultrasound, fetal MRI, genetic information and pathological findings in the assessment of fetal brain abnormalities
    • Understand how imaging findings can influence prenatal diagnosis, counselling and clinical management
    • Discuss the ethical considerations involved in counselling when significant fetal brain abnormalities are identified
    • Appreciate the fetus as an individual patient when considering diagnosis, treatment options and clinical decision-making

Reading the lesion: haemorrhage, vascular injury and tumour:

  • Vascular insults and their sequelae: venous thrombosis, ischaemia and the brain afterwards
  • Fetal intracranial tumours: haemorrhage, mass effect and the brain around them
